I hope this doesn't become a mandatory thing but, if it should, let's move it to earlier in the process and not bog things down even further at the gate - for example, there's an ID check before you enter the security line do it there and then, FFS.

When my turn came I said I was opting out and it took my pointing out that the big sign right over there says participation is voluntary before they sent me for the manual ID check the GA who'd made the initial announcement was the one doing ID checks and he made such a big theatrical event out of comparing my face to my passport photo (ooh, that pensive scowl, so Olivier, such Barrymore) that I expect to see his "For Your Consideration" ad in the trade magazines. I had my first encounter with biometric ID checking when returning home from Las Vegas on Wednesday.Īt the boarding gate it was announced over the PA that we'd have pictures of our faces taken and compared against our ID while the GA (gate agent) didn't mention this was a voluntary procedure, I noticed that the big sign at the gate which said it was happening also said that we had the right to opt out.so I did, not necessarily for any sociopolitical statement but mainly because it was pissing me off that they were adding extra time to the boarding process while people stood in a particular spot and waited for their faces to be scanned, and when the system couldn't get a decent image (which seemed to be happening every 5-6 passengers), they'd be pulled out of line so another GA could do a manual check.the same manual check being done at every gate not using the biometric system.
